I HAVE SERVED OUR DISTRICT FOR 12 YEARS AT THE SAME SCHOOL I AM A DEDICATED BILINGUAL TEACHER WITH 35 YEARS OF SOLID TEACHING EXPERIENCE. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO LEAVING THE DISTRICT THIS SUMMER.
I WAS GOING BACK TO MY PREVIOUS DISTRICT BECAUSE I WANTED TO RETIRE WITH MY VERY CLOSE FRIENDS, AND ALSO BECAUSE MY PREVIOUS DISTRICT HAS A VERY GOOD RETIREMENT PACKAGE FOR TEACHERS THAT ARE RETIRING LIKE MYSELF.
YOU SEE, THE DECISION TO CHANGE THE TEACHERS' HOURS IN OUR DISTRICT CAME A LITTLE TOO LATE IN THE SUMMER, AND SO I HAD ALREADY MADE THE DECISION TO STAY HERE.
I'M ASKING YOU TO PLEASE DO THE SAME THING FOR YOUR TEACHERS.

YOU KNOW, A LOT OF TEACHERS PUT THE MATERIALS IN THE LITTLE BASKET SO THE KIDS CAN GET THEM EASILY SO IT DOESN'T A LOT OF TIME A CLASSROOM, ALL OF THOSE THINGS. RIGHT NOW WE GET 45 MINUTES A DAY AND 30 MINUTES AFTER SCHOOL.
A LOT OF THAT TIME IS CO-OPTED BY MEETINGS. SOMETIMES PLANNING MEETINGS, SOMETIMES OTHER MEETINGS, ADMINISTRATIVE MEETINGS AND SOMETIMES TRAININGS.
ALL OF ITS VERY VALUABLE ALL OF IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, I THINK YOU WOULD AGREE, IS THE TIME THAT TEACHERS HAVE TO PREPARE TO ACTUALLY TEACH THE STUDENTS AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY HAVE THEIR MATERIALS READY. SO I HAVE ALWAYS TO COMPENSATE FOR WHAT I FEEL IS THE LACK OF TIME DURING THE CONTRACT HOURS.
I AND MANY OTHER TEACHERS CONSISTENTLY COME IN EARLY, STAY LATE, OR BOTH EVERY DAY.
I'M HAPPY TO WORK ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR THE CHILDREN I TEACH AND CARE FOR EVERY DAY BECAUSE I I NEVER STOP THINKING ABOUT THEM THEY ARE ALWAYS ON MY MIND.
MY FEAR. ONE MINUTE IS THAT THIS TIME I NORMALLY COUNT ON TO FINISH PREPPING FOR INSTRUCTION AND TAKE CARE OF THE CHILDREN WILL BE MORE TIME CO-OPTED FOR TASKS THAT WILL NOT DIRECTLY IMPACT STUDENT OUTCOMES. STRESSED BRAINS CANNOT LEARN, KIDS FEEL STRESS FROM THE ADULTS AROUND THEM, NO MATTER HOW WELL IT IS HIDDEN. TO TRULY INCREASE LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS NEED CLASSROOM TIME TO PREP MATERIALS AND PLAN THEIR INSTRUCTION AND HELP WITH CREATING MATERIALS, PREPPING MATERIALS, ETC.
HAPPY TEACHERS HELP KIDS REGULATE THEIR NERVOUS SYSTEMS SO THEY ARE READY TO LEARN.
WHEN KIDS ARE COMFORTABLE, FEEL SAFE, AND ARE READY TO LEARN, DVISD LEARNING OUTCOMES WILL INCREASE.

WHILE WE RECOGNIZE THAT AN EIGHT-HOUR DAY CAN BE CONSIDERED STANDARD IN MANY FIELDS, THE LACK OF ADVANCED NOTICE HAS MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR EDUCATORS TO ADJUST THEIR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES ACCORDINGLY.THE ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL TIME DOES NOT COME WITH ADDITIONAL TIME FOR ESSENTIAL TASKS SUCH AS LESSON PLANNING, GRADING, AND PROVIDING PERSONALIZED FEEDBACK TO PARENTS SO THEY CAN SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN.
IN MY CASE, I'M THE SOLE PROVIDER FOR MY HOUSEHOLD.
I WORK A SECOND JOB AND I CARE FOR A DISABLED RELATIVE AT HOME.
AND STILL I'M ONE OF THE FIRST TO ARRIVE AT SCHOOL EACH MORNING READY AND COMMITTED TO MY STUDENTS.
ONE MINUTE IN CONCLUSION, I RESPECTFULLY ASK THE BOARD TO RECONSIDER THE ADDITION OF THE EXTRA TIME AND ENGAGE IN A DIALOG WITH TEACHERS ABOUT THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS WITHOUT FURTHER COMPROMISING THE WORKLOAD AND WELL-BEING OF EDUCATORS.

YOUR DECISION TO EXTEND THE TEACHER'S DUTY HOURS WITHOUT ANY AUTHENTIC FEEDBACK OR INPUT FROM THE TEACHERS HAS LEFT ME FLABBERGASTED, DISAPPOINTED, AND MOSTLY DISRESPECTED. I'M TOLD THAT ADDING 30 MINUTES TO THE DAY WILL ALLOW FOR MORE INSTRUCTION TIME.
WHAT WILL THE STUDENTS BE DOING DURING MY UNPAID LUNCH PERIOD? HOW WILL I BE GUARANTEED THAT MY UNPAID LUNCH PERIOD WILL NEVER BE INTERRUPTED BY STUDENT EMERGENCIES, AS IT IS VERY OFTEN AT THIS POINT. I UNDERSTAND THAT OUR CONTRACT STATES OUR DUTIES MAY CHANGE OR CAN BE REASSIGNED, BUT I FEEL THIS CHANGE DEMONSTRATES A TREMENDOUS BREACH OF CONFIDENCE IN THE TEACHERS AND A LACK OF SUPPORT.
AS PROFESSIONALS, THIS CAN ONLY LEAD TO A DEGRADED SENSE OF MOTIVATION AND EXTREME TEACHER BURNOUT.

THE PROPOSED EXTENDED DUTY DAYS AS 93 ADDITIONAL HOURS OF DUTY TIME OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR.
YET THERE IS NO PROMISE OF EXTRA PAY FROM DISTRICT FUNDS TO COMPENSATE FOR THE DUTY HOURS INCREASE.
THE MID-SUMMER ANNOUNCEMENT HAS TRAPPED TEACHERS WHO HAVE WANTED TO LEAVE THE DISTRICT WITHIN THE LEGAL RESIGNATION PERIOD, BECAUSE OF CHANGES TO THEIR DUTY HOURS. TEACHERS WORK LONG ENOUGH HOURS WE ALREADY WORK MORE THAN 40 HOURS IN THE VIEW OF AFTER SCHOOL MEETINGS, GRADING AT HOME AND MANDATORY ATTENDANCE AT CAMPUS OR DISTRICT SPONSORED EVENTS.
THIS EXTENSION OF DUTY HOURS AT OUR WORK SITE WILL MEAN WE HAVE LONGER DUTY HOURS THAN TEACHERS OF AISD, AUSTIN ISD, OUR BIGGEST NEIGHBOR. THE EXTENSION WILL INCREASE BURNOUT.
ONE MINUTE DVEA BELIEVES THIS DECISION TO EXTEND DUTY HOURS SHOULD BE REVERSED.
TEACHERS FEEL SLIGHTED AND DISRESPECTED BY THE DECISION.

BUT THE CHANGE IN SCHOOL HOURS OF 8:15 AM TO 4:45 PM, COMMUNICATION WAS SENT OUT FROM THE DISTRICT ON JUNE 24TH, 2025, STATING THIS ALIGNMENT OF WORKDAY SCHEDULES MIRRORS TIME AND EXPECTATIONS OF MANY NEARBY DISTRICTS LIKE SAN MARCOS ISD AND PFLUGERVILLE ISD.
SAN MARCOS ISD HAS A 7-HOUR 40-MINUTE SCHOOL DAY FROM 8:40 AM TO 4:20 PM, AND PFLUGERVILLE ISD HAS A 7-HOUR 15-MINUTE SCHOOL DAY FROM 9:00 AM TO 4:15 PM, WHICH PLACES DEL VALLE HIGH SCHOOL 50 MINUTES TO 1 HOUR AND 15 MINUTES LONGER THAN THE TWO DISTRICTS REFERENCED.
UPON RESEARCHING 11 AREA SCHOOL DISTRICTS I FOUND THAT THE EARLIEST START TIME FOR HIGH SCHOOL IS IN LEANDER, WITH SCHOOL HOURS OF 8:15 AM TO 3:35 PM AND THE LATEST IN TIME SCHOOL HOURS WERE FOUND ON AUSTIN ISD OF 9:00 AM TO 4:35 PM.
AREA SCHOOL DAYS RANGED FROM 7 HOURS 15 MINUTES THROUGH 7 HOURS AND 40 MINUTES.
DEL VALLE WOULD BE AT 8 HOURS AND 30 MINUTES.
I AM UNSURE HOW DEL VALLE CAN JUSTIFY THAT THEY ARE ALIGNING TO SCHOOL AREAS WHEN THIS WOULD PUT OUR SCHOOL DAY LONGER THAN THE OTHER 11 AREA SCHOOL DISTRICTS, ACCORDING TO TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY WEBSITE, TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS MUST PROVIDE AT LEAST 75,600 MINUTES.
ONE MINUTE WITH THE NEW SCHOOL HOURS, THE INCREASE IN MINUTES REFLECTS AN INCREASE FROM 79,590 TO 86,410 OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, BASED ON THE SCHOOL CALENDARS TAKING ACCOUNT THE SAME NUMBER OF INSTRUCTION DAYS, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SOME CHANGES IN THE NUMBER OF HALF DAYS AND FRIDAYS WHERE SCHOOL IS SHORTENED BY ONE HOUR. THUS, THE COMPENSATION FOR THE 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR WILL NOT BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE SCHOOL BOARD UNTIL THE AUGUST 2025 MEETING.
PER COMMUNICATION WITH DEL VALLE HUMAN RESOURCES, THIS IS AFTER THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS AND THERE'S UNCERTAINTY IF EMPLOYEES WILL BE COMPENSATED FOR THE ADDITIONAL TIME THAT IS BEING ADDED TO OUR SCHEDULE. PER COMMUNICATION FROM THE DISTRICT ON JUNE 17TH, HOUSE BILL 2 PROVIDES AN INCREASE TO PAY. THIS PAY HAS WORKED ON THE EMPLOYEES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN WHAT THEY'VE BEEN DOING BY MOVING TO INDICATE THIS DIMINISHES THE PAY INCREASE FROM THE STATE. I DO COMMEND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDE AN INCREASE OF 1500 FOR THOSE WITH 1 TO 2 YEARS EXPERIENCE, AS HOUSE BILL 2 ONLY COVERS AN INCREASE FOR TEACHERS THAT HAVE THREE OR MORE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. WITH THESE CHANGES, I PROPOSE THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT REVERSES ITS DECISION

THE SUPERINTENDENTS ITS CONCLUSIONS WERE DAMNING, AND FOR THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF TEACHERS WHOSE CLASSROOM HAD NOT BEEN VISITED BY CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION, THEY FELT THEIR EFFORTS WERE BEING DISMISSED AND UNDERMINED.
IT WAS HARDLY A GOOD START TO A PROCESS WHERE EDUCATORS NEED TO BE ENGAGED IN COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS WITH ADMINISTRATION TO MOVE THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FORWARD. IT WAS HARDLY A WAY TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE.
IN APRIL, THERE WAS AN ATTEMPT TO RESTRICT PUBLIC COMMENTS TO ITEMS ONLY ON THE BOARD AGENDA.
A BIG THANK YOU TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR CHANGING COURSE ON THAT ISSUE.
MOVING ON TO JUNE, WE HAVE TWO ITEMS OF CONTENTION.

AND WHEN THEY DO, STUDENTS LOSE, EXCUSE ME, CONSTANCY MOMENTUM AND TRUST.
WE KNOW WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO SUCCEED STRONG, MOTIVATED, AND EMOTIONALLY AVAILABLE TEACHERS.
THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE WHEN EDUCATORS FEEL UNDERVALUED, MICROMANAGED, AND OVERWHELMED.
